Update again! Tensions are real between the North and South…

For those who don’t know: The Brooks and Sumner affair of 1856 was the result of an debate¬†in Congress regarding abolition. When the strongly opinionated, southern Brooks was challenged regarding his owning of slaves by the stubborn abolitionist Sumner, Brooks ended up beating Sumner with his cane. Sumner was forced to go through physical therapy for years¬†because of the attack, and Brooks was justified in many southern sympathizing newspapers while he was under fire for “southern honor” hypocrisy in formal debates.

John Brown was also an abolitionist who attempted to lead a slave rebellion in the south but it failed and he was hanged, resulting in his northern martyrdom and the subsequent Yankee song: “John Brown’s Body”.
